Checking the steering rack seals (Audi A4 B6)

The right and left parts of the toothed rack protruding from the housing are protected by rubber cuffs. If dirt and moisture get under the corrugated cover through torn or damaged cuffs, then in combination with grease they form something like an abrasive paste, which constantly wears away the steering gear pinion. For this reason, worn cuffs should be replaced immediately.

1. Use a flashlight to illuminate each corrugated case.

2. Turn the steering wheel to the right or left until it stops. To find cracks in the folds of the cover, stretch the cover in sections.

3. The bandages on the cuffs should fit securely.

To check the steering wheel seals, insert your hand into the wheel well. The steering wheel must be turned to the stop in both directions. By stretching the folds (arrow), you can find damage.
