Checking the steering gear play (Audi A4 B6)

If the play is not the result of a defect, it can be adjusted, but it is better to do this in a workshop.

1. Place the wheels straight.

2. Through the open window, grab the steering wheel and turn it at a small angle, first one way, then the other.

3. The front wheel should move in accordance with the steering wheel turn. Look at the wheel rim, as elastic tires absorb some of the wheel movement.

4. If there is no play in the steering mechanism when the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position, but the mechanism jams when the steering wheel is turned strongly, then the toothed rack is worn out. In this case, the steering mechanism must be replaced.
