1. Stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition and turn the steering wheel from side to side. If there is play in the mechanism, accompanied by noise or knocking, the mechanism can be adjusted.
2. Apply the handbrake, raise the front of the vehicle and install safety stands.
3. Ask an assistant to turn the steering wheel half a turn in both directions. Tighten the self-locking adjusting screw one-eighth of a turn at a time until all play is eliminated (pic. 23.3).
4. Lower the car and drive. If the steering wheel does not return without driver assistance after exiting a corner, loosen the nut gradually to restore normal operation.
5. If there is still play during normal return of the steering wheel, reduce it with the adjusting nut by one-eighth of a turn.
6. If the above adjustments do not give the desired result, it is possible that the rail is worn out beyond the allowable one, the mechanism must be removed and repaired.
