- If a howling sound appears in any gear and its tone changes as the throttle is increased or decreased, then the teeth of a pair of gears in this gear may be worn out.
- If rustles occur in all gears, then the reason lies in the main gear or the bearings of the gearbox shafts.
- Rough grinding noises, which are only audible when the gearbox is warm, indicate thumping synchronizing rings. When the oil liquefies, it is squeezed out by the synchronizing ring always in the same place.
- Noises during the operation of the torsion differential, which occur at the beginning of the movement in quattro with a strongly turned steering wheel, are normal and due to the design.
