Power steering — general information (Audi A4 B5)

To prevent steering from becoming a chore, all Audi A4 models have hydraulic power steering – the so-called servo steering. The auxiliary force is high-pressure hydraulic fluid, which is supplied to a rack in the steering gear housing, which functions as a piston. You determine the direction in which the fluid is pumped by turning the steering wheel. This rotation is transmitted to a valve system that regulates the direction and amount of fluid flow. The pressure in the hydraulic system is generated by a vane pump driven by the engine via a V-belt or V-ribbed belt.
