Large diameter connecting wires running from the ignition coil to the distributor or from the distributor to the spark plugs (six-cylinder engines do not have a distributor), as a rule, do not create problems. Their tips with interference suppression resistors should be securely fastened to the distributor cap and oxidation of the contacts should not be allowed.

If the high-voltage wires harden and become brittle, they must be replaced with new ones. For six-cylinder engines, ready-made wires are sold, complete with tips. For four- and five-cylinder engines, these wires are sold as a measured product, for which it is also necessary to purchase brass terminals and secure the tips with an interference-suppressing effect.

Attention! "Leaky" high-voltage wires are easy to recognize if you open the hood at night. Spark discharges will be visible on such a wire. Weak currents running like lightning along the wires can be ignored.

On AUDI vehicles, no spark plug high-tension cable tips of any kind can be used. The corresponding tips must have an internal resistance of 4-6 kOhm.

This requirement also applies to the interference-suppressing tips attached to the distributor and ignition coil. These tips must have an internal resistance of 0.6-1.4 kOhm.

The distributor runner has a strictly regulated resistance that does not interfere with radio reception and is 0.6-1.4 kOhm. The runner is marked "R1".

Attention! If one of the engine cylinders does not work constantly or in damp weather, then, as a rule, the reason for this is a defect in the spark plug tip. This leads to a spark overlap between the tip metal and the spark plug electrode with a breakdown of the insulating material of the tip. Such a tip defect cannot always be detected. To check, it is recommended to replace the suspected faulty tip with a known good one. If such a malfunction occurs while driving, we recommend removing the metal cap of the spark plug tip.

High-voltage wires are connected to the ignition distributor in accordance with the firing order of the cylinders (see illustrations).

If, with the distributor cap removed, the rotor plate faces the notch on the distributor housing, then the piston of cylinder No.1 is at TDC.

The order of operation of the cylinders is as follows:
  • four cylinder engines: 1-3-4-2. The runner rotates to the right (clockwise).
  • five-cylinder engine: 1-2-4-5-3. The runner rotates to the right (clockwise).
  • six-cylinder engines: 1-4-3-6-2-5. There is no ignition distributor. The connection of wires to the ignition coils corresponds to the arrangement of the cylinders.
