The drive of the air conditioning compressor on vehicles with a six-cylinder engine is carried out by a ribbed belt, which has an automatic tension mechanism.
On vehicles with diesel engines, the air conditioning compressor is also driven by a ribbed belt. The air conditioning compressor is located on vehicles with diesel engines on the right side of the engine above the generator (see illustration 17.0a).
The refrigerant enters the evaporator, where it again passes into a gaseous state, while taking away heat. Cooled air from the evaporator is directed to the passenger compartment. From the condenser, located next to the engine cooling radiator, the refrigerant enters the compressor again. To enhance the condensation of the refrigerant, the constant radiator blower blows air through the condenser.
In order for the air conditioner to work flawlessly, the drive belt (respectively, wedge or rill) must be properly tensioned. For more details on this, see «Generator».
Repair of the air conditioner, with the exception of checking the V-belt / ribbed belt, is not possible on your own. Not all AUDI workshops can also perform this repair. For this reason, the repair of the air conditioner should be entrusted to special workshops.
In order for the air conditioner to work flawlessly, it should also be turned on during the cold season. Otherwise, the sealing gaskets of the refrigerant circuit will dry out; they become stiff and lose their sealing properties.
The refrigerant, which is a lubricant for gaskets, evaporates. For this reason, it is recommended to turn on the air conditioner in winter together with the heater.
