All functions related to heating and ventilation of the passenger compartment in AUDI 80 cars can be set from the passenger compartment using switches on the heater and fan control unit. Cables are pulled from these switches to the flaps in the air intake box. These flaps control the air flow.

Removal and installation of all cable drives are generally performed in the same way.

1. Remove the glove box.

2. Remove the radio.

3. Remove the handles of all three rotary switches on the heater and fan control unit.

4. Remove the two Phillips head screws located underneath the rotary switches.

5. Remove the heater and fan control unit panel.

6. Remove the four Phillips head screws.

7. Pull the heater and fan control unit out of the opening on the instrument panel. The unit cannot be completely removed yet, but this will be enough to provide access to the cable tie-rod fastenings to the unit elements.

8. Pull out the cable traction counter support with a screwdriver (see illustration)

8. Pull out the cable traction counter support with a screwdriver (see illustration)

9. Disconnect the rod from the drive lever. The end of the cable rod is tied in the form of an eye and hung on the drive lever. The cable rod casing is secured to the air damper eyes and fixed with plastic couplings.
