Note. Before removing the brake pads, if they are not to be replaced, carefully note their positions in order to reinstall them. Never depress the brake pedal when the brake pads have been removed. Brake pads must only be replaced in pairs at the same time on both brakes. Brake coolant wear can be checked without removing the wheels using a feeler gauge that is inserted between the caliper and the wheel disk. The clearance is checked between the hold-down spring and the brake shoe lining backing.
Withdrawal
Raise the front of the car, put it on stands and remove the wheels.
Remove the retaining spring for the brake pad retaining pins.
Knock out the lower fixing pin with a punch.
Remove the cruciform pressure spring.
Remove the upper guide pin, using a puller with hooks that go into the holes for the pins in case of difficulty.
Remove the inner block with pliers.
Move the bracket towards the outer shoe and remove the outer shoe, notch (shown by a small arrow in the photo) enters the ledge of the caliper.
Remove the outer block with pliers.
Clean the pad pockets in the caliper. Fully sink the piston into the cylinder, trying to prevent splashing of brake fluid from the reservoir of the master cylinder. If necessary, remove part of the brake fluid from the reservoir with a syringe. The removed liquid cannot be reused.
Installation
Check the position of the piston relative to the caliper with a template: the piston must be at an angle of 20°to the support plane of the pads. If necessary, set the piston to the correct position.
Checking the correct installation of the piston with a template (see drawing) is done as follows:
- attach the template to the upper guide plane in the caliper;
- if the piston is not at an angle of 20°in the caliper, turn the piston with the pliers until it is in the correct position.
Install new brake pads in the caliper. When installing the inner brake pad, take care not to seize the piston or damage the protective cap.
Install new locking pins, lock them with a new locking spring. Install a new pressure spring.
Replace the brake pads on the other wheel in the same way.
Press the brake pedal several times to set the pistons to the working position.
Check and, if necessary, top up the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
Bleed hydraulic brakes if necessary.
Install the wheels and lower the car to the floor.
