Open the expansion tank cap. Remove noise insulation screens "1" and "2". Install the tray for service cranes "VAS 6208" under the engine. Unscrew the drain plug "arrow" on the connecting nipple and drain the coolant.

Remove the coolant hose from the left coolant pipe by loosening the hose clamp "arrow" and drain the coolant.

Remove cover "1" of the drive shaft in the left wheel arch.

Remove the coolant hose "arrow" from the right lower coolant pipe, lift the mounting clamp and drain the remaining coolant.

Refueling
The ignition is off.
Note: The cooling system is filled with a coolant solution and coolant additives for the entire year. Only use the coolant according to the Electronic Parts Catalog. Other additives can significantly reduce the anti-corrosion effect. The resulting damage can lead to coolant leakage and, as a result, to serious engine damage. Coolants with the correct mixing ratio prevent the formation of corrosion and limescale. In addition, they increase the boiling point. Therefore, a concentrate must be present in the cooling system throughout the year. Particularly in countries with a tropical climate, due to the increased boiling point, the coolant ensures reliable engine operation under high load. The freezing point of the coolant must be at least - 25°C, in countries with an arctic climate at least -35°C. It is prohibited to reduce the additive content in the coolant by topping up the coolant, even in the warm season or when operating in countries with a warm climate. The proportion of concentrate must be at least 40%. If climatic conditions require the use of a coolant with a lower freezing point, the coolant additive content can be increased to 60% (coolant freezing point is -40°C). With a different proportion, the freezing point of the coolant decreases, and, in addition, the efficiency of the cooling system decreases. Only clean drinking water should be used to mix the coolant. When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, cylinder head, cylinder head gasket or cylinder block, reusing the drained coolant is prohibited. Contaminated coolant cannot be used further. To check the freezing point of the coolant, use the refractometer "T10007".
Ratio of components in coolant
Additive (40%) and coolant (60%) to ensure a freezing temperature of -25°C.
Additive (50%) and coolant (50%) to ensure a freezing temperature of -35°C.
Additive (60%) and coolant (40%) to ensure a freezing temperature of -40°C.
Install the coolant hose on the lower right coolant pipe. Connect the coolant hose to the left coolant pipe "arrow". Screw the drain plug "arrow" with a new sealing ring into the connecting nipple.
Pour at least 12 liters of pre-mixed coolant in the correct proportion into the cooling system filling device tank: Screw on the cooling system tester adapter "V.A.G 1274/8" to the expansion tank. Install the device for filling the cooling system on the adapter "V.A.G 1274/8". Place the outlet hose "1" in a small container "2". The air being discharged will capture a small amount of coolant, which must be collected. Close the taps "A" and "B" by turning them perpendicular to the direction of flow. Connect the hose "3" to the compressed air. Pressure: excess pressure 6...10 bar.

Open valve "B" by turning it in the direction of flow. A vacuum is created in the cooling system using an ejector pump; the indicator arrow should be in the green field. Open tap "A" briefly, for which turn it parallel to the flow direction so that the hose of the tank of the device for filling the cooling system is filled with coolant. Close tap "A" again. Open tap "B" for 2 minutes. A vacuum continues to be created in the cooling system using the ejector pump; the indicator arrow should be in the green field. Close valve "B". The indicator arrow should remain in the green field, in which case the cooling system is provided with sufficient vacuum for subsequent filling.

If the arrow is below the green field, repeat the previous operations. When the vacuum decreases, check the cooling system for leaks. Remove the compressed air hose. Open tap "A". Due to the vacuum, the coolant coming out of the tank of the device for filling the cooling system fills the system. Remove the device for filling from the adapter "V.A.G 1274/8" on the expansion tank of the cooling system. Put the tube on "V.A.G 1274/10" on the adapter "V.A.G 1274/8". Fill with coolant until the cooling system tester tube is completely filled. If necessary, add coolant while bleeding air.

Remove the engine casing "arrows". Unscrew the ventilation plug "arrow" of the front coolant pipe to let the coolant out. Close the plug.

Unscrew the ventilation plug "arrow" of the rear coolant pipe to allow the coolant to exit. Close the plug.

Remove the gasket "3". Release the fastening clamps "1" from the fasteners and remove the cover of the water drainage box "2"

Loosen and remove the coolant hose to the heat exchanger so that the coolant comes out of the vent hole "arrow" in the coolant hose. Place the coolant hose on the connecting nipple and secure it with a spring clamp.

On vehicles with independent heating, switch on the heater for approx. 30 seconds. Close the expansion tank cap. Start the engine. Set the temperature for all zones to "HI" and, if possible, set the lowest ventilation level (= 0). Switch off the air conditioning compressor by pressing the AC button. The tester LED in the button should not light. The engine should run at 2000 rpm for 3 minutes. Let the engine idle until the 2 large coolant hoses on the radiator are hot. The engine should run at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes. Switch off and let the engine cool down. Install noise insulation screens and the drive shaft cover. Check the coolant level. When the engine is cold, the coolant temperature level should be at the "MAX" mark. If the engine is warm, the coolant level may be above the "MAX" mark.
