General information about automatic transmission (Audi A4 B5)

The models described in this manual are equipped with four-speed automatic transmissions with electronic control. The design of the transmission includes a torque converter and a planetary gearbox.

The mode selection is carried out by means of a seven-position selector lever mounted on the floor in the passenger compartment. The following positions are provided: P (Park - parking), R (Reverse - reverse), N (Neutral-neutral position), D (Drh/e - all forward gears are engaged), 3 (gear shifting does not occur above third), 2 (gear shifting does not occur above second), 1 (first gear engaged). The gearbox is equipped with a kick-down system, which engages a lower gear when the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way down.

The operation of the automatic transmission is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU) and does not require manual intervention in adjustments. Qualified troubleshooting is possible only with the help of specialized diagnostic equipment.

Due to the complexity of the design, any work on repair and maintenance of the automatic transmission should be entrusted to the dealer. The information in the following paragraphs contains only a description of the procedure for removing the entire gearbox. The procedure for removing, installing and adjusting the gear selector cable is also described.
