The distributor high voltage wires are connected to the spark plugs in accordance with the firing sequence in the 1.6L engine. The numbers indicate which cylinder the wire should go to (numbering system from front to back). The letter "Z" indicates the main high voltage wire to the spark plugs.
74 kW engine
The distributor is, to some extent, two-story. Each floor performs a different job:
- At the top, a rotating distributor pin supplies high voltage current to the individual spark plugs.
- At the bottom of the distributor there is a Hall sensor that sends ignition pulses.
How to open a distributor
1. Use a screwdriver to pry up the metal fastening brackets of the cover.
2. Disconnect the screen wire connected to ground.
3. Remove the distributor cap, the high voltage wire remains connected.
4. Disconnect the distributor pin and remove the dust cover located underneath it.
5. When installing, place the dust cover so that its mounting protrusion fits into the groove on the edge of the distributor housing.
6. On the distributor pin there is a welded protrusion that fits into the recess of the distributor shaft.
7. The distributor cap also has a welded protrusion to prevent it from turning, which should fit into the cutout in the distributor housing.
Checking the ignition distributor
1. Remove the distributor cap. It must be clean inside and out to avoid creating a jumper that conducts ignition current due to dirt, abrasion products or moisture.
Important: Clean the spark plug wire contacts on the inside of the distributor. The oxide layer causes ignition problems.
2. The graphite contact brush in the middle should be smooth and shiny, easy to compress and release again without jamming.
3. The distributor pin must not be melted in the area of the contact tongue and above the casting compound of the anti-interference resistor between the middle contact and the tongue. The distributor pin must be marked "R1".
4. The pencil-like marks on the distributor cap are traces of burns from creeping currents that have made their way through dirt or dampness and left these burns.
5. In this case, as a temporary solution, you can scrape them off with a screwdriver or knife and cover them with universal glue, nail polish, or, in an emergency, lipstick.
