In Audi ignition systems without a distributor, the ignition timing cannot be adjusted. For distributor ignition with a 74 kW engine, the ignition control is checked by the workshop as part of a technical inspection. To do this, first of all, the computer is interrogated. Then the ignition/injection control unit is brought to the basic position. This is also done with a computer reader.
It does not make sense to adjust the ignition setting yourself if the information in the computer was not read first. Since our control units «self-learning», then they can carry out the appropriate adjustment of the ignition, if, for example, one sensor signal has dropped out. Before anything is changed in the ignition setting, you must first make sure that no defect in the system has distorted the ignition setting.
The same applies to the so-called basic setting using the VAG 1551 computer reader. As long as the control unit is not brought into the basic setting state, correct adjustment cannot be made. The Audi workshop is therefore the most suitable partner for this work. The workshop checks the following parameters: control value: 0–12°; setting value 0±3°.
