Constant control
The alarm system must always be in working condition, so its switch is powered from the battery plus directly through the fuse. In contrast, the direction indicators receive voltage from terminal 15 only when the ignition is on.
1. With the ignition off, press the hazard warning switch on the dashboard.
2. All six direction indicator lights, the indicator light in the hazard warning switch, and both direction indicator lights flash in the same rhythm.
3. Turn off the alarm, turn on the ignition.
4. When the turn signal lever is pressed, all the lights on the corresponding side and the associated green warning light flash rhythmically.
Violations in the work of direction indicators
If the green control lamp flashes only briefly when the ignition is switched on, then one incandescent lamp, front or rear, has failed. But a failed side turn indicator light is not registered. In the flashing of the alarm, the burned-out lamp is also not noticeable by the rhythm of the direction indicators. For lamp replacement, see chapter Lighting.
If the lights are on constantly when the direction indicators or alarms are on, then the breaker relay is faulty.
If the direction indicators flash either in a slow or in an accelerated rhythm and all plug connections, including the wire of the lights connected to ground, are in order, the relay in the alarm switch must be replaced.
If only the hazard warning signal works without direction indicators or vice versa, then no voltage is supplied through the corresponding fuse (see table in chapter Electrical equipment) or defective alarm switch (for dismantling, see chapter Tools and equipment).
Dismantling the relay-breaker
Relay-breaker (1) integrated in the hazard warning switch in the Audi A4. It is dismantled in the same way as a key switch in the dashboard («Tools and devices»).**
The relay-breaker in the Audi A4 is not located on the support with the relay. It is integrated into the alarm switch. Reason: saving the mounting element. Here about dismantling:
1. Carefully pry out the switch key with a small screwdriver.
2. Grab the switch from the sides with pliers and pull it out of the mounting hole.
Temporary help with a faulty breaker relay
If the breaker relay fails, further travel is unsafe, especially in the dark, road users will not know about your intention to turn. In this case:
1. Remove the alarm switch with relay-breaker and disconnect the connector.
2. Make a jumper between terminals 1 and 6.
3. To do this, insert a paper clip or a short piece of wire from the back into the appropriate sockets so as to connect the connector pins.
4. Insulate the wire.
5. Now, if you press the turn signal lever, one side is constantly on.
6. Turning the turn signal lever on and off will give you an intermittent rhythm.
