- Open the oil filler cap and check the sealing ring for porosity
- Check the fastening of the ventilation hoses from the oil filler cap to the air filter
Check:
- Cylinder head cover gasket
- Cylinder head gasket
- Ignition distributor flange mounting locations
- Oil filter seal and oil filter at oil filter flange
- Oil drain plug (sealing ring)
- Oil pan gasket
- The junction of the engine and gearbox (seal at the flywheel or gearbox shaft)
- Seal rings for camshaft, secondary and crankshaft (from the toothed belt side)
Since oil spills over a large surface area of the engine when there are leaks, it is difficult to determine the location of the leak at first glance. When searching, it is advisable to proceed as follows:
- Wash the engine. Spray the engine with a regular engine cleaner and after a while pour water over it. Before this, cover the ignition distributor and generator with plastic bags.
- Sprinkle talc or lime onto joints and gaskets.
- Check the oil level and adjust if necessary.
- Test drive Since the oil liquefies when the engine is hot and leaks more quickly, the test drive should be carried out over a distance of approximately 30 km on the motorway.
- Inspect the engine with a lamp, locate leaks and eliminate defects.
