Disassembly
Place the gearbox on a disassembly stand.
Drain the oil from the gearbox housing.
Remove the plug from the rear gearbox cover by using a large screwdriver to punch a hole in the center of the plug and remove it.
Lock the primary shaft by placing the locking pin on the splines for the clutch driven disc hub.
Remove the hex bolt from the rear end of the input shaft.
Loosen the bolts securing the rear gearbox cover.
Remove the rear gearbox cover using a bearing puller.
Remove the spring pin from the 1st and 2nd gear shift fork rod by turning the leash to the left.
Engage III gear by pulling out the III and IV gear shift fork rod.
Turn the gear selector rod to the left and remove it.
Remove the leash from the fork rod of the 1st and 2nd gears.
Knock out the spring pin from the 5th gear fork, while holding the fork rod with a hammer so as not to damage the hole for the fork rod in the gearbox pit wall.
Using a two-lever puller, remove the connecting piece together with the 5th gear pinion, the sliding sleeve and the 5th gear synchronizer sleeve. Make sure that the 5th gear engagement fork remains free. The fork rod remains in the crankcase (see photo).

Remove the 5th gear needle bearing inner race and thrust washer, using two large screwdrivers if necessary.
Disengage any gear and lock the input shaft with the VW 294b1 locking device.
Remove the nut from the rear end of the secondary shaft.
Remove the 5th gear pinion using a double-lever puller (see photo).

Set the gear shift fork rods to neutral position.
Remove the gearbox housing together with the primary and secondary shafts and clamp it in a vice with soft metal pads.
Knock out the spring pin from the shift fork of the third and fourth gears, holding the fork rod with a hammer so as not to damage the fork rod socket in the bulkhead of the gearbox housing
Pull out the fork rod of III and IV gears enough to be able to remove the fork.
Note: If you plan to remove the secondary shaft, pull out the fork rod of III and IV gears completely.
Move the secondary shaft back slightly (6-8 cm).
Remove the primary shaft assembly with the fork of III and IV gears.
Return the fork rods to the neutral position.
Knock out the axle and remove the reverse intermediate gear.
Press the secondary shaft out of the gearbox housing.
Warning: When pressing out the secondary shaft, make sure that the 1st and 2nd gear shift fork rod does not jam; if necessary, release it by lightly hitting it with a hammer.
Remove the secondary shaft together with the rod and fork of the 1st and 2nd gears.
Loosen the bolts securing the differential output shafts, holding them with pins.
Loosen the differential cover mounting bolts.
Remove the differential cover using two levers.
Remove the differential.
