Disassembling and assembling the starter (Audi 80 B2)

Disassembling and assembling the starter is not particularly difficult. Use the provided exploded view as a guide. When inspecting the parts, check:

• condition and degree of wear of the brushes, their free movement in the grooves of the brush holders;
• brushes fit to the collector and spring pressure on the brushes;
• appearance of the manifold. The manifold can only be cleaned with a clean rag soaked in gasoline or trichloroethylene. Sand the manifold only with fine-grained sandpaper. It is prohibited to use sandpaper for this purpose;
• the condition of the most so-called bushings of the covers. When replacing bushings, put new bushings before installation in boiling motor oil for 5 minutes;
• appearance of the anchor and stator. Make sure that their windings have no breaks or signs of burning;
• when assembling, install a new retaining ring.
