Working with the parking brake (Audi Q7-4L-D)

Replacing brake pads

1. The installation details of the parking brake shoes are shown on illustrations 3.1, 3.7 and 3.23.

2. Remove the brake pads, pull the brake pad wear sensor wire out of the holder on the caliper and press the pistons into the caliper (see Section 3).

3. Remove the bolts (20 in illustration 3.23) fastening the caliper to the hub assembly holder, carefully remove the caliper and secure it to the wire on the body, preventing the hose from being pulled.

4. Unscrew the parking brake adjusting nut (11 in illustration 3.23) and reset the parking brake. To do this, turn the adjusting nut (And in illustration 3.6), overcoming the resistance of the tension spring (B), so that the disk rotates freely.

5. Unscrew the brake disc mounting bolt and remove the disc. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the extender and use a suitable tool to release the tension spring (see illustration).





6. Remove the brake shoe guide pins together with the guide springs. Then remove the shoe assembly with the second tension spring and expander. Separate the tension spring and expander from the pads.

7. Installation is carried out in reverse order. After replacing the pads, adjust the parking brake (see subsection below).

Adjusting the parking brake

8. Adjustment of the parking brake is required when:

• Replacing the parking brake pads;
• Replacing rear brake discs;
• Excessive free travel of the parking brake pedal;
• Replacing the parking brake cables.

9. Make sure that the cables and other moving parts of the parking brake drive are in good condition and move easily. Adjustment should be made on both sides.

10. Make sure the parking brake pedal is released.

11. Remove the rear wheels and make sure the rear brake discs rotate freely.

12. Unscrew the parking brake adjusting nut (11 in illustration 3.23) and turn the brake disc so that the adjusting nut is visible through the resulting hole. Use a screwdriver to turn the adjusting nut (And in illustration 3.6), overcoming the resistance of the tension spring (B), so much so that the parking brake pads touched the disc, and the disc could not rotate. Then loosen the adjusting nut 6 clicks. After this, the disc should rotate freely.

13. Check the free travel of the parking brake pedal. To do this, press the parking brake pedal all the way down twice - the wheels should still rotate freely, without sticking. Press the pedal until it clicks 4-7 times, after which the wheel should brake. If the specified conditions are not met, repeat the adjustment.



14. Install the wheels. After replacing the parking brake pads and performing this adjustment, the pads should be ground in (see subsection below).

Grinding in the parking brake pads

15. Before grinding, the parking brake must be adjusted (see subsection above).

16. On a stationary road, accelerate the vehicle to 20 km/h. Pull the parking brake release lever and hold it so that the parking brake pedal is not locked. While continuing to hold the lever, press the parking brake pedal; you will not hear the sound of the pads touching the drum. In this position, ride for about 100 m.

17. Release the parking brake pedal and its lever.

18. After this, check the pedal's free play again (see paragraph 13).

Removal and installation the parking brake pedal

19. The installation details of the parking brake pedal and intermediate module are shown in the illustrations.







20. Remove the driver's side instrument panel trim and footrest.

21. Disconnect the parking brake arming D/V connector. Remove the left relay and fuse box and move it as far to the side as possible.

22. Unhook the cable from the support (2 in illustration 4.19a), unscrew the bolts (5 and 6) securing the pedal, remove the pedal from the support and remove the spring cover.

23. Press on the spring plate (And in the illustration), and then compress the spring (B) and, holding it compressed, lock the spring.



To do this, insert a suitable drill bit through the holes in the pedal and cable support.

24. Unhook the cable (And in the illustration) from its support (1) on the pedals.





25. Installation is carried out in reverse order. Remove the drill after tightening the pedal mounting bolts. Finally, check the pedal's free play (see paragraph 13).

Removal and installation the rear parking brake cable

26. The rear cable mounting details are shown in the illustration.



27. Make sure the rope is not taut.

28. Measure the distance (and in the illustration) and loosen the nut (1) so that the cables can be unhooked from the compensator.



29. Release the cable bushing from the support, remove both rear wheels and unhook the cable from the expander as described in paragraphs 30-32.



30. Unscrew the parking brake adjusting nut (11 in illustration 3.23) and turn the brake disc so that the adjusting nut is visible through the resulting hole. Turn the adjusting nut (And in illustration 3.6), overcoming the resistance of the tension spring (B).

31. Remove the brake disc (see section 3).

32. Press the cable end down against the spring in the expander (see illustration), so that the cable could be pulled out.



Unhook the cable from the holders on the fuel tank and on the subframe.

33. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

Removal and installation the front parking brake cable

34. Remove the driver's seat, center console and door sill trim (see Chapter 10).

35. Remove the parking brake pedal (see the relevant subsection above).

36. Unhook the cable (2 in the illustration) from the support (1) in the intermediate module, lift the floor covering and pull out the cable.
