Vehicles with all-wheel drive, as a rule, belong to the class of SUVs. But AUDI Allroad cars, having a drive on all four wheels, remain at the same time representatives of their class, and are not SUVs.
A well-known disadvantage of SUVs is the need to turn on rear-wheel drive only when driving over rough terrain. When driving on a flat roadway, this drive must be turned off, because when making a turn, the radius of movement of the front wheels is greater than the rear wheels, and the car becomes difficult to control.
In AUDI cars, this problem is solved due to the so-called distributive (interaxle) differential (Torsen distribution differential), developed by Gleason. The use of this differential provides constant all-wheel drive. Disabling the differential, as is done with SUVs, is not required when driving on a road with a smooth and hard surface (see illustration 1.0a).
The code, serial number and designation of the gearbox are stamped on its body (see arrows in illustration 1.0b).
