Gearbox — Checking and filling transmission fluid (Audi A6 C5)

1. Place the car on jack stands and remove the engine splash guard. The car must be strictly horizontal. The gearbox is very sensitive to excess transmission fluid.

2. Unscrew the threaded plug B of the filling hole, which is located on the gearbox housing in front of the left axle shaft (see illustration). The plug may be covered by a heat shield above the drive shaft. In this case, the shield should be removed.



3. Use a self-made wire pin with the end bent at an angle of 90° and check the oil level in the gearbox. At the same time, hold the pin in the hole strictly horizontally, and its curved end should be turned down.

4. Remove the pin from the hole and measure the oil level on the pin. The level is normal if it is 9±1 mm below the filler hole.

Attention! If the check reveals that there is little fluid in the gearbox, the gearbox should be inspected for leaks and oil leaks. If necessary, contact a workshop to repair the gearbox.

5. Add transmission fluid to the gearbox if necessary. Do not overfill the gearbox with transmission fluid.

6. Screw the threaded plug into the filler hole and tighten it to 40 Nm.
