The shock absorber can be checked manually.
Remove the shock absorber.
Hold the shock absorber in the installation position, stretch and compress the shock absorber.
Throughout the entire movement, the rod must move with uniform force and without jerks.
A defective shock absorber is identified during driving by impacts and cracks. However, these noises often have other causes, such as loose bolts, nuts, defective wheel bearings, constant velocity joints. Therefore, before replacing the shock absorber, it should be checked, perhaps even on a stand.
Under normal operation, small traces of oil are not a reason for replacement. A rough estimate is as follows: if the oil stain is visible and is not located within the upper lock of the shock absorber (shock absorber seal) to the lower spring cup, then the shock absorber is considered normal. An additional condition is that the spot should be without shine, matte or covered with dust. Small oil leaks are even an advantage, since this lubricates the seal and thus extends the service life.
If there is a large loss of oil, the shock absorber is replaced.
