Front oil seal
1. Remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 40.
2. If a special tool is available, the oil seal can be replaced without removing the oil pump, otherwise refer to Chapter 44. It is also recommended to use the Audi 2080 tool together with the guide sleeve to install a new oil seal. Dip the oil seal in the engine oil before installing.
3. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt as described in Chapter 40.
Rear oil seal
4. Remove the flywheel or drive plate as described in Chapter 41.
5. If a special tool is available, the oil seal can be replaced without removing the casing, otherwise unscrew and remove the casing (including two pallet bolts) and remove the gasket (photo). If the sump gasket was damaged when the cover was removed, the sump must be removed and a new gasket installed. However, install the drip tray only after adjusting the casing.
6. Knock the old oil seal out of the casing, then lower the new one into the engine oil and drive it into the casing. Make sure that the closed side of the gland is facing out.
7. Install the casing with a new gasket, tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence.
8. Install the flywheel or drive plate as described in Chapter 41.
