1. The steering damper is fitted on direct-acting steering models and is connected between the tie rod retainer and the mounting lug on the outer end of the steering housing.
2. To remove the shock absorber, unscrew and remove the bolt securing the rod to the tie rod fastener, then unscrew the nut, disconnect the shock absorber from the outer mounting post.
3. On the shock absorber removed, check that the piston rod moves evenly and smoothly through its full stroke. Replace shock absorber if necessary.
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Tighten the nuts with a torque specified specification. If the auto-lock nuts have been removed more than two or three times, they must be replaced, otherwise the auto-lock action will not be sufficient. Replace them as a precaution if in doubt.
