Adjusting the tension of the timing belt (Audi 80 B2)

Remove the front timing belt cover.

Turn the crankshaft to the position corresponding to the TDC of the end of the piston stroke of the 1st cylinder. In this case, the mark on the crankshaft pulley should be opposite the edge of the "Z" protrusion of the indicator on the cylinder block.

Check the tension of the toothed belt by turning it with the force of your thumb and index finger 90° around its axis in the middle of the branch between the toothed pulleys of the camshaft and crankshaft. The belt should not turn more than 90°.

To adjust the belt tension, loosen the water pump mounting bolts, insert a screwdriver or lever into the recess "A" (see photo) of the water pump housing and turn the housing with the lever until the desired tension is achieved.

Tighten the water pump mounting bolts.

Turn the crankshaft two revolutions and check the timing belt tension.

Install the front timing belt cover.
