Disassembling the engine (Audi 80 B2)

Remove auxiliary units from the engine. Wash and clean the engine, install it on a stand for disassembly.

Note: When disassembling, apply marks to the removed parts that are suitable for further use so that when reassembling, they can be installed in their original places and positions.


Remove the spark plugs.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Remove the front timing belt cover.

Loosen the water pump mounting bolts and loosen the timing belt.

Remove the camshaft drive belt.

Remove the camshaft timing pulley.

Remove the rear timing belt cover.

Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the correct order.

Shine the cylinder head with the gasket.

Lock the crankshaft pulley with the VW 2084 locking tool and unscrew the bolt securing the pulley to the crankshaft.

Remove the water pump.

Remove the oil pan.

Remove the oil receiver and the pipe that attaches it to the oil pump.

Remove the clutch housing. This will release the driven clutch disc.

Remove the front cover of the cylinder block together with the oil pump.

Loosen the connecting rod bolt nuts and remove the connecting rod caps.

Remove the pistons with connecting rods through the cylinders, remove the connecting rod bearing shells.

Remove the flywheel.

Remove the holder together with the rear crankshaft oil seal.

Loosen the main bearing cap mounting bolts and remove the caps together with the lower bearing shells.

Remove the crankshaft from the bearing seats, and then the upper bearing shells.

Remove the thermostat housing and thermostat.

Separate the connecting rods from the pistons by removing the retaining rings and connecting rod pins.
