Note: The steering mechanism cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely.
Removal
Raise the front of the car.
Loosen the bolts securing the steering rods to the steering gear housing bracket and move the rods away from the bracket.
Remove the lower instrument panel trim.
Loosen the steering shaft clamp bolt and separate the steering shaft from the drive pinion shaft using a brass drift.
Loosen the right and left bolts securing the steering gear housing to the body.
Turn the wheels to the right and remove the steering gear through the hole in the right wheel.
Installation
Note: Replace the self-locking nuts and copper O-rings each time the steering gear is removed.
The steering gear is installed in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- before installing the steering gear housing, tighten the bolts securing the steering rods to the bracket. When installing the rods on the car, unscrew one bolt, install the rod, then install the second rod;
- replace the lock washers of the steering rod mounting bolts, bend the tabs of the washers after lowering the car to the floor;
- after installing the steering mechanism, check and, if necessary, adjust the toe-in of the front wheels.
