The AT code is additionally indicated on the vehicle data sticker (see Introduction).
When starting off, the automatic transmission acts as a regular clutch, and when the car is moving, it performs the job of shifting gears. The gears are engaged by hydraulic activation.
The main components of the AT are: torque converter (torque converter), planetary gearbox, differential, hydraulic and electronic control units.
The torque converter is similar in function to a hydraulic clutch. Its task is to provide clutch at the moment of starting the movement and when engaging another gear. The torque converter is equipped with a locking clutch, which allows it to operate without slipping. With the torque converter lock-up clutch closed (depending on the load and speed) forward transmissions are driven mechanically, without torque converter slippage.
The automatic transmission is controlled by a selector lever mounted on the center console and connected to the automatic transmission by a cable. The engine can only be started when the "P" or "N" mode is selected. Gear shift timing, depending on driving conditions, is determined automatically by the automatic transmission control unit based on fuel economy, maximum engine performance, and individual driving style.
An ATF cooler is used to cool the ATF. The only maintenance procedure that should be performed regularly is checking the ATF level see Section 4 of Chapter 1.
This chapter provides only general information on the operation and design of the AT.
Transmission repair requires a variety of specialized tools, so disassembling and assembling the transmission and its components should be left to service station specialists with the appropriate equipment.
