Specifications
Audi Allroad cars are equipped with V-shaped 6-cylinder diesel engines of 2.5 liters.
Cylinder blocks are cast from gray cast iron, and block heads are made from light metal alloy and are bolted to the blocks. Each cylinder has two intake and two exhaust valves, and each block of cylinders has two camshafts.
The timing belt drives the intake camshafts, which drive the exhaust camshafts via gears. The drive of the injection pump of the distributive type is carried out by a separate toothed belt.
The crankshaft rotates in five main bearings. The axial play of the crankshaft is regulated by thrust half rings located on the neck of the fourth main bearing (see illustration 1.0).
The intake and exhaust valves on all engines are actuated by the camshaft cams via hydraulic tappets, thanks to which the valve clearances are adjusted automatically and remain constant. For this reason, valve clearance adjustment is not required during vehicle maintenance.
The engine is liquid cooled. It should be remembered that the engine cooling circuit must be filled all year round with coolant, which is a mixture of the appropriate concentrate (antifreeze) with anti-corrosion additives and distilled water.
These engines use a cross-flow scheme, in which air enters the cylinders on one side, and the exhaust gases are removed on the opposite side.
Engine lubrication is provided by an oil pump located in the oil pan. The oil pump is driven by a chain from the crankshaft.
The oil pump drive chain is also used to drive the balance shaft, which reduces unwanted engine vibrations.
