Adjusting the parking brake (Audi A4 B6)

Warning: Due to the automatic self-adjusting of the parking brake, adjustment is usually not necessary. Adjustment of the parking brake is only required if the cable, rear calipers or brake discs are replaced. Adjustment conditions: The main brake system must be bled and the brakes must be in good working order. The parking brake lever, cables and holders must be fully installed.


1. Mark the direction of rotation of the tire with an arrow. Unscrew the wheel mounting bolts. Raise the car and place it on stands.

2. Remove the ashtray and rear seat heater control panel, refer to Section Removal and installation the ashtray.

3. Remove the cover located above the parking brake latch from the center console.

4. Insert wooden spacers with a thickness of A = 1.5 mm into both rear calipers.

5. Press the brake pedal hard at least three times. You should feel a noticeable resistance.

8. Release the unlock button.

9. Pull the parking brake lever firmly at least three times.

10. Return the lever to its original position and press the release button. Both latches should catch the parking brake cable eyes.

11. Release the release button, return the parking brake lever to its original position and remove the spacers in the calipers.

12. Check the position of the lever at the calipers using a feeler gauge. The distance (A) between the lever and the stop should be from 0 to 1.5 mm. If this value is different, adjust the parking brake.

13. Replace the cover over the latch.

14. Reinstall the ashtray and rear seat heating control panel, refer to Section Removal and installation the ashtray.
