Sometimes you will have to go to a workshop, for example, for regular maintenance, if the warranty period for the car has not yet expired. If you do not have free time, the necessary experience or special tools, you can also go to a workshop to repair your car. Even if the problem is taken by a professional mechanic, the results of maintenance and repair depend on you. We give a number of tips and rules that must be followed when visiting a workshop.

Sometimes it is impossible to do without the services of a specialized workshop. In the workshop, with the help of modern diagnostic devices, the causes of some malfunctions can be found very quickly

Authorized (warranty) and independent workshops

In general, you can decide for yourself which workshop is best to contact. Along with authorized workshops that work under a contract with car manufacturers, you can also contact an independent workshop. Independent workshops can also professionally perform many types of repair work. Oil changes, new brake pads and disks, tires, bumpers in these workshops are often cheaper. In any case, the workshop must have qualified personnel, and the workshop itself must be a member of the corporation of auto repair shops.

If the warranty period for the car has not expired, then its inspection should be carried out in a warranty workshop. The same applies to most types of repairs. Of course, despite the warranty, you can correct the varnish coating or straighten the sheet yourself, you can also contact one of the independent workshops. However, if after this there are problems with the repaired section, then it will no longer be possible to make any claims under the warranty.

Be sure to sign a repair contract

Make a list of symptoms and defects that you noticed during the operation of the car. Discuss this list in the workshop with the master or consultant. Do not hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear to you. Show the defects directly on the car.

Give specific tasks. In the case of a general task like "prepare for technical inspection" or "prepare for vacation", uncertainties will inevitably be programmed, and you may also have to pay for work that you did not intend to order at all.

Be sure to draw up a written contract for repairs. It should define all the work as precisely as possible. Get confirmation of receipt of the order.

Ask about prices

Before assigning a repair, inquire about the estimated cost, which includes payment for work and materials. Set a maximum cost for additional work, if it becomes necessary to carry out such work during the repair. If the scope of repair and costs cannot be precisely determined in advance, set a maximum cost limit.

Ask about the cost of troubleshooting. For example, if the car is consuming too much gas or is difficult to start, if the engine is knocking or there are unusual noises in the wheels, then finding the cause of these symptoms can sometimes cost more than the repair itself. For this reason, eliminate the limit price for troubleshooting as well.

Leave your phone number at the workshop so that they can call you if the scope of repairs turns out to be more than planned. Also make additional agreements in writing.

In case of a large repair, ask the workshop representatives for a preliminary cost estimate, on the basis of which you can determine what expenses you should expect. As a rule, a preliminary estimate is calculated only if you will not subsequently give the workshop an assignment for repairs. In case of unforeseen work, the bill may exceed the preliminary cost estimate by no more than 15-20 percent.

Cheaper parts for an old car

In the case of an older car, it makes sense to ask about special offers regarding the purchase of parts and payment for maintenance. Warranty workshops often offer branded parts at reduced prices. In this case, as mentioned above, you can save up to 30 percent.

If you need to replace the entire unit, you don't necessarily need to install new parts. Ask if the workshop has prepared and tested replacement parts - these parts cost less with the same quality. This could be the engine, clutch, generator, starter, and water pump.

Changing your oil at a workshop or petrol station can be expensive if you are offered the most expensive oil. Ask for a cheaper oil of the same specification – these oils are usually also suitable.

Technical inspections and warranties

During the inspection, first of all, the condition and functioning of the units are checked and, if necessary, they are replaced. This concerns those units that affect the reliability and safety of the car. With a calm driving style and appropriate operating conditions, it is quite possible to fully use the entire period set by the manufacturer until the first maintenance, i.e. 30 thousand km or 2 years.

Be sure to adhere to the maintenance schedule set by the manufacturer, refuse to repair it yourself. The manufacturer accepts reasonable warranty claims only if maintenance work is performed in a timely manner, and in an authorized workshop. After a mileage of 30 thousand km, wear and tear may occur in such components as the brake system, wheel suspension, tires and steering, which remains unnoticed by the driver. Thus, regular maintenance prescribed by the manufacturer not only allows you to keep the car in perfect order, but first of all, it ensures your safety.

Checking your account

After the repair, check the invoice issued by the workshop together with the repairman or consultant.

Ask for clarification of any abbreviations or technical terms that you do not understand. The invoice should separately list such items as payment for work, materials, and value-added tax.

File complaints in a timely manner

Poor quality repairs should be advertised as early as possible. The workshop is responsible for its work during the warranty period, which should be specified depending on the type of work (but not less than a month). If any malfunctions occur as a result of unqualified repairs, you have the right to demand compensation for damages from the workshop.

If the basis for the complaint arises when you pick up the car from repair, the workshop may insist that you nevertheless pay for the repair in full before picking up the car. In this case, make a note on the invoice that the payment is subject to a reservation.

The complaint should be filed in a business conversation. If disagreements cannot be resolved, contact auto experts and the relevant authorities.
