Ignition system. General information (Audi 80 B3)

The task of the ignition system of a gasoline engine is to create an ignition spark in the right cylinder at the right time. The ignition spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinder. The ignition spark is generated by an ignition coil, in which the 12 V battery voltage is converted to a voltage of 25,000-30,000 V.

Depending on the model, the AUDI 80/90 has either a transistor ignition system (TSZ) or a fully electronic ignition system with knock ignition control (VEZ). The ignition system of the 118/125 kW engines largely corresponds to the VEZ system, but is integrated into the electronic engine management system (MPI).

The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, spark plugs, an ignition distributor with a Hall sensor and a rotor, and an electronic control device.

The main board of the TSZ system relay serves to dissipate heat. Before installing the relay, thoroughly clean the main board and the mating surfaces and cover them with a special paste to improve heat dissipation.

Caution: The operating temperature of the device is discharged through the body, therefore the engine should not run if the relay is not installed and secured.
