Repairing a manual transmission unit is a tough job for a home mechanic. In addition to disassembly and reassembly, clearances must be accurately measured and, if necessary, adjusted by fitting gaskets. Transmission internals are also often difficult to obtain separately and in many cases extremely expensive. Because of this, if the transmission is damaged or noisy, it is best to have the unit repaired by a specialist, or have the unit replaced.
However, it is possible for a more experienced mechanic to repair a transmission if special tools are available and the work is done gradually so as not to miss anything.
Tools needed for overhaul: pliers for inner and outer circlips, bearing pullers, slide hammer, a set of thin bits, a test indicator, and possibly a hydraulic press. In addition, a large and sturdy workbench and vise.
When disassembling the transmission, carefully note how each component is installed, which will allow for easy and accurate reassembly.
