1. Apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands.
2. Engage neutral gear.
3. Remove the shift knob and cover.
4. Loosen the adjustment bolt at the bottom of the shift lever through the hole in the skid plate behind the gearbox.
5. From inside the vehicle, set the shift lever to the vertical position, then check that the distance from the lock ball lugs to the shroud is the same on each side (photo).
6. Tighten the adjustment bolt without changing the position of the gear lever.
7. Check that all gears can be freely engaged. Also check that the reverse safety latch engages and, if necessary, loosen the screws and turn the ball shroud slightly. Tighten the screws.
8. Install the shift knob and cover, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
