Air filter — design description (Audi A4 B6)

To burn fuel, the engine needs clean air. Dirt and dust particles on the cylinder running surface could cause engine damage in a short time. Therefore, the intake air must first pass through the air filter in the so-called intake noise muffler. This unit also plays an important role in the intake system, as it suppresses intake noise and calms the swirling air flow. The air filter consists of a filter housing and a cartridge that is compressed like an accordion.

Regular air filter maintenance

The air filter is sealed against the housing by a rubber seal. As it passes through the filter, dirt particles are deposited in the fine-pored filter paper, and larger dust particles fall into the filter housing. The filter can only cope with its task if it is regularly maintained. A dirty cartridge does not allow enough air into the engine. The mixture becomes richer, power drops, and fuel consumption increases.
