To facilitate cold starts, diesel models are equipped with a preheating system that includes glow plugs, a control unit (built into the ECU of the engine), installed on the front panel indicator and connecting wiring.
Candles - a miniature electric heating element enclosed in a metal case with a tip on one side and an outlet on the other. A glow plug is screwed into the intake tract of each cylinder, installed in the path of the fuel torch. If a supply voltage is applied to the spark plug, the fuel, passing through a heated or hot tip, heats up, reaching the optimum temperature in the combustion chamber.
The duration of the glow of the candles is controlled by a command from the control unit, which monitors the temperature of the engine according to the signals from the coolant temperature sensor.
The glow of the indicator lamp on the instrument panel indicates that the candles are warming up. The lamp goes out when it reaches a temperature sufficient to start the engine, however, power is supplied to the candles for some time before starting. If there was no attempt to start, the power supply to the candles is turned off so as not to discharge the battery and burn out the candles. If a malfunction occurs in the control system, the indicator will flash and the system will go into bypass mode. In this case, you must present the car to an Audi/VAG dealer for diagnostics.
