Note: It is also possible to remove the pistons without removing the engine from the vehicle, although it is more convenient to do this with the engine removed and mounted on a workbench. Although the procedures marked with an asterisk can be performed with the engine still in the vehicle with the oil pan removed, it is better to perform them with the engine removed for cleanliness and ease of access. For these reasons, these procedures are described in chapter 2B.
