Clutch actuation (Audi A4 B5)

The force with which we press the clutch pedal must be transmitted to the release bearing. In the Audi A4, this is done hydraulically – just like in the brake system. When you press the clutch pedal, the piston in the slave cylinder (on the clutch pedal) displaces a certain amount of liquid and transfers it to the master cylinder (on the gearbox). There the piston extends slightly out of the cylinder and thus the release lever sets the release bearing in motion.

Tip: Each clutch engagement causes the driven disk linings to slide relative to the opposing friction surfaces and heat them up. Particularly severe wear is caused by starting from a standstill at high revs, which is called cavalry starting, starting in 2nd gear, driving at intersections in 2nd or 3rd gear with the clutch pedal partially depressed, or driving uphill.
