If the airbag module (2) is removed, the connector (1) must be disconnected.

The steering wheel can only be removed when the wheels are in the straight-ahead position. First disconnect the airbag connector (1 and 2) and the horn wire connector (3).
The airbag inflators and the belt tensioner are subject to the Explosives Act and should therefore only be handled by professionals who are familiar with the detailed safety instructions.
The following points are especially important in the list of precautions:
Execution order
1. When working on the airbag, disconnect the battery and additionally insulate the negative terminal.
2. Additionally disconnect the plug connector under the right instrument panel trim.
3. Do not leave the airbags unattended during breaks in work.
4. Fold the airbag module with the impact plate only (plate with soft upholstery) up.
5. When welding on a vehicle, disconnect the battery.
6. After an accident, replace all system components.
7. Dismantle the vehicle for scrap only according to the instructions!
Removal the airbag in the steering wheel
Removing the steering wheel due to the built-in airbag is associated with some additional problems. Those who are not confident in themselves should leave this work to a workshop.
1. Be sure to follow the safety instructions.
2. Do not turn on the ignition during the entire work, also because otherwise the information about the malfunction will be entered into the computer memory. Memory erasure is only possible in a workshop.
3. Open the door on the passenger side next to the driver, remove the side trim of the instrument panel and disconnect the red plug connector underneath it.
4. Unscrew the airbag module on the steering wheel on the right and left rear using a TORX T30 key.
5. Fold the airbag module back.
6. Disconnect the airbag module connector.
7. Fold the airbag module so that the Audi rings on the top of the module are visible.
8. Remove the upper part of the steering column trim (two bolts at the bottom).
9. Disconnect the wire connectors to the steering wheel (from the airbag module and horn).
10. Lock the steering wheel.
11. Loosen the steering column nut with a replaceable nut SW 24.
12. Make sure the steering wheel is in a straight position (shoot only in this position).
13. Remove the nut and washer, remove the steering wheel using rocking movements.
14. When installing the steering wheel, pay attention to the symmetrical arrangement of its spokes.
15. Insert the steering lock into the groove.
16. Tighten the steering column nut to 40 Nm.
17. After securing the steering wheel, hand tighten the airbag module mounting bolts.
18. Then first tighten the right bolt in the direction of travel to 6 Nm.
19. Finally, tighten the left bolt to 6 Nm.
