The indicator lights are dim or out
- The battery is discharged. Start the engine with a booster battery
- The contacts are loose or oxidized. Inspect the wire connection points
- The starter shorts to ground (-). Rebuild the starter
The indicator lights are bright and the starter clicks can be heard
- Knock on the starter. If it does not work, then check the carbon brushes in the brush holder or replace the traction relay or send the starter for repair, since the winding is broken.
The indicator lights are bright, but the starter clicks are not audible
- The traction relay is "stuck" or overheated. Ask an assistant to turn the key in the ignition and tap on the traction relay
- The wire to terminal 50 of the traction relay from the ignition switch is broken. Check the wire with a tester with a control lamp
The starter works but the engine does not start
The starting gear is jammed
- Rebuild the starter
The starter or flywheel pinion ring gear is damaged
- Push start the engine. Replace damaged parts.
The traction relay switches on and off, but the starter does not operate
The battery is very low
- Charge the battery
The starter continues to operate when the ignition key is released
The traction relay sticks and does not turn off
- Turn off the ignition immediately, disconnect the battery if necessary. Replace the traction relay.
Defective ignition/starter switch
- Replace the ignition/starter switch
The starting gear does not come out
The return spring is weak or broken
- Turn off the ignition immediately and send the starter for repair
The ring gear of the starting pinion or flywheel is dirty or broken
- Clean the crown or replace faulty parts
