On vehicles with a 5-cylinder engine and a variable catalyst, leaks in the exhaust system in front of the exhaust gas sensor can lead to the following malfunctions:
Difficulties in starting the engine, engine stops, uneven idling, jerks during acceleration.
Test conditions: The engine must be cold and compressed air must be available.
Lower the engine and try to identify leaks by ear.
Stop engine.
Insert a compressed air hose into the end of the muffler and seal it with a rag.
Adjust the air pressure to 6 bar. Turn on compressed air.
Spray the system connections, i.e. cylinder head/exhaust pipe, pipe/downpipe and downpipe/catalyst with a standard product "Leck-Sucher" and check for bubbles.
Eliminate leaks.
