Clean the working surfaces of the guides.
Install a new valve. The end of the valve stem should end in a guide bushing.

Note: Inlet valves must be installed in their guides, and outlet valves in their guides, since inlet and outlet valves have different stem diameters.
Determine the valve stem tilt clearance. The clearance is determined by an indicator. The VW 689/1 tool is used to attach the indicator. The wear limit is 1.0 mm for the inlet valve and 1.3 mm for the outlet valve.
If the skew gap is too large, the guides are replaced.
