Drain
Remove the hood.
Open cap -arrow- of expansion tank. Remove soundproofing. Place a pallet for service cranes -VAS 6208- under the engine. Detach lower coolant hose -arrow- from radiator and drain off coolant. Pos. -1- ignore.
Detach coolant hose -arrow- from oil cooler, fold down and drain remaining coolant.
Gulf
Instruction. The cooling system is filled with a solution of water and anti-corrosion anti-freeze concentrate, designed for operation at any time of the year. Only Plus -6 012 A8F A1 additive may be used. (short designation: "G12+"). Other concentrates may impair the properties of the coolant, primarily anti-corrosion. The resulting damage can cause leaks in the cooling system and lead to serious engine damage. Concentrate "G12+" can be mixed with concentrates "G11" And "G12". "G12+" and concentrates marked "according to TL W 774 F" prevent freezing, corrosion and scale formation. In addition, they increase the boiling point. Therefore, an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion concentrate must work in the cooling system throughout the year. Coolant with a high boiling point reliably protects the engine when operating at high loads, especially in countries with a tropical climate. The freezing point of the coolant must be at least -25°C (in countries with arctic climate, not less than -35°С). It is also forbidden to reduce the proportion of concentrate in the coolant in the warm season or when operating in countries with a warm climate by adding water to the cooling system. The share of concentrate should be at least 40%. If, due to climatic conditions, the freezing point must be lowered, the proportion of concentrate can be increased "G12+", but not more than up to 60% (freezing temperature in this case will be about -40°C). If this limit is exceeded, the freezing point will rise again and, in addition, the heat capacity of the coolant will decrease. Use only clean drinking water to mix the coolant. When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, cylinder head, cylinder head gasket or cylinder block, the drained coolant must not be reused. Contaminated coolant must not be used in the future. Use clamps of the appropriate series to fasten all hose connections. To check the freezing point in the concentrate cooling system "G12+" refractometer -T10007- must be used.
Connect lower coolant hose to radiator -arrow-. Pos. -1- ignore. Fill coolant tank of coolant system filling unit -VAS 6096- with at least 6 liters of coolant pre-mixed in the appropriate proportion:
- G12+" (40%) and water (60%) for freezing temperatures down to -25°C.
- G12+" (50%) and water (50%) for freezing temperatures down to -35°C.
- G12+" (60%) and water (40%) for freezing temperatures down to -40°C.
Screw adapter -VAG 1274/8- onto expansion tank. Attach cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096- to adapter -VAG 1274/8-. Insert outlet hose -1- into small reservoir -2-. With the outgoing air, a small amount of coolant is thrown out, which must be collected. Close both valves -A- and -B- by turning the lever perpendicular to the flow direction.
Connect -3- to compressed air. Pressure: 6...10 bar overpressure.
Open valve -B- by turning the lever parallel to the flow direction. In the cooling system with the help of a pump, a reduced pressure is created. The indicator arrow should move to the green field. Briefly open the suction valve -A-. To do this, turn the lever in the direction of flow to fill the coolant hose from the coolant reservoir of the cooling system filling unit -VAS 6096-. Close valve -A- again. Leave valve -B- open for 2 minutes. The vacuum in the cooling system continues to be created by the ejection pump. The indicator needle should remain in the green field. Close valve -B-. The indicator needle should remain in the green field, in this case, the reduced pressure in the cooling system will be enough for its subsequent filling. If the arrow is below the green field, repeat the previous operations. If the pressure rises, then the cooling system is leaking. Remove pressure hose. Open valve -A-. The vacuum in the cooling system ensures that the coolant is drawn from the coolant reservoir -VAS 6096-; the cooling system is charged. Remove coolant system filling tool -VAS 6096- from expansion tank adapter -VAG 1274/8-. Unscrew the screw plug for the breather hole -arrow- on the top left coolant hose to the radiator. Fill with coolant until it appears in the vent hole. Screw in the screw plugs.
Unscrew the vent plug -arrow- for the coolant supply hose to the heater heat exchanger, if present. Fill with coolant until it appears in the vent hole. Screw in the screw plugs.
Check the oil level and fill the coolant up to the maximum mark. On vehicles with an auxiliary heater, turn on the heater for approx. 30 seconds. Run the engine for a maximum of 2 minutes at a speed of 2000 rpm and at the same time add coolant to the maximum mark on the expansion tank. Screw in the screw cap of the coolant reservoir. Start the engine and keep it running until the coolant fan comes on.
Check coolant level and top up coolant if necessary. With a warm engine, the coolant level should be at the maximum mark, with a cold engine, between the minimum and maximum marks. Turn off the engine.
