Carrying out work in the engine compartment
When carrying out any kind of work in the engine compartment, special care is required!
Carrying out work in the engine compartment, such as checking and topping up operating fluids, poses a risk of injury, burns, accidents and fire. Therefore, be sure to follow the warnings and safety instructions below. The engine compartment of a car is a dangerous area!
- Stop the engine.
- Remove the ignition key from the lock.
- Apply the handbrake securely.
- Set the gearshift lever of the manual transmission vehicle to the neutral position / the control lever of the automatic transmission vehicle to the position "N".
- Let the engine cool down.
- Do not spill operating fluids on a hot engine. Fluid data (e.g. antifreeze contained in the coolant) may ignite!
- Watch out for short circuits in the electrical system, especially in the battery.
- Never put your hands under the cooling fan, it may suddenly turn on!
- Never open the cap of the expansion tank of a warm engine. The cooling system is under pressure!
- To protect your face and hands from the effects of hot steam or hot coolant, cover the plug with a sufficiently large cloth when opening the expansion tank.
- If it is necessary to carry out inspection operations on a running engine, be aware of the additional danger posed by rotating parts (e.g. V-ribbed belt, alternator, cooling fan, etc.), as well as from the high voltage circuits of the ignition system.
When working on the power supply or electrical system, additionally observe the following:
- always disconnect the battery from the on-board network;
- no smoking;
- never work near an open flame;
- Always keep a good fire extinguisher at the ready.
