Carrying out work in the underhood space
When carrying out any kind of work in the engine compartment, special care is required!
Carrying out work in the engine compartment, such as checking and adding operating fluids, poses a risk of injury, burns, accidents and fire. Therefore, it is imperative to follow the warnings and safety rules below. The engine compartment of a vehicle is a dangerous area!
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key from the lock.
- Apply the handbrake securely.
- Set the gearshift lever of a vehicle with a manual transmission to the neutral position / the control lever of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to the "N" position.
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Do not spill operating fluids on a hot engine. These fluids (for example, antifreeze contained in coolant) may catch fire!
- Beware of short circuits in the electrical system, especially in the battery.
- Never place your hands under the cooling system fan, it may suddenly turn on!
- Never open the expansion tank cap of a warm engine. The cooling system is under pressure!
- To protect your face and hands from the effects of hot steam or hot coolant, cover the cap with a sufficiently large cloth when opening the expansion tank.
- Whenever it is necessary to perform checks on a running engine, be aware of the additional hazards posed by rotating parts (for example, a poly V-belt, a generator, a cooling fan, etc.), as well as from high voltage circuits of the ignition system.
When carrying out work on the power supply system or electrical equipment, the following must also be taken into account:
- always disconnect the battery from the vehicle's electrical system;
- no smoking;
- never work near an open flame;
- always keep a working fire extinguisher on hand.
Closing the hood
- Pull the hood down until the force of the gas-filled spring is completely overcome.
- Close the hood with a light blow until it clicks into place - do not press any further!
