The battery in all Audi A4 models is located on the right front in the so-called dampening box (between the engine and the windshield). For engines of different power, the A4 also provides batteries of different performance:
- 12V/36Ah, 175A (for four-cylinder engine with a working volume of 1.6 l).
- 12V/44Ah, 220A (for four-cylinder engine with a working volume of 1.8 l).
- 12V/70Ah, 320A (1.8 liter engine capacity with automatic transmission, as well as for all six-cylinder engines).
- It is also possible to install larger batteries than those listed above.
Battery data
Voltage and capacity: In the designation 12 V/44 Ah, the 12 V in front, of course, informs about the battery voltage. After the diagonal line, the current strength is indicated in the "temporarily supplied quantity" - A hour means ampere hours. This is the nominal capacity of the battery, which is measured according to the conditions of the standard. In reality, only 2/3 of the indicated capacity is calculated; but if the battery is old, then only half the capacity.
Low Temperature Current: The number 220A or 320A indicates the current the battery can deliver at -18°C.
Type number: A five-digit number for all German battery manufacturers serves to identify the battery. Audi also has corresponding numerical characteristics. For example, in the numbers 54 459 or 57 0707, the first digit (5) indicates the battery voltage of 12V. The following digits 44 or 70 provide information on the battery capacity. The last two digits indicate design features, such as its shape, terminal arrangement, degassing hose, handle and locking bar at the base.
Tips: If you are considering buying a new battery, you do not necessarily have to stick to the type number listed by Audi. Battery manufacturers maintain comparison lists that can be used to determine the right battery. For the sake of a lower price, you can forgo the practical handles for carrying the battery. But for safety, you cannot compromise on the way the battery is secured.
