The battery in all Audi A4 models is located on the right front in the so-called dampening box (between engine and windshield). For engines of different power, the A4 also provides batteries of different performance:
- 12 V/36 Ah, 175 A (for a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters).
- 12 V/44 Ah, 220 A (for a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters).
- 12 V/70 Ah, 320 A (engine displacement 1.8 l with automatic transmission, as well as for all six-cylinder engines).
- You can also install larger batteries than those listed above.
Battery Data
Voltage and capacity: in the designation 12 V / 44 Ah, the 12 V in front indicates, of course, the battery voltage. After the oblique line, the current strength is indicated in «temporarily supplied quantity» – A hour means ampere hours. This is the nominal capacity of the battery, which is measured according to the terms of the standard. In fact, only 2/3 of the indicated capacity is calculated; but if the battery is old, then only half the capacity.
Current at low temperatures: the number 220 A or 320 A indicates the amount of current that the battery can provide at -18°C.
Type number: All German battery manufacturers use a five-digit number to identify batteries. Audi also has corresponding numbers. For example, in the numbers 54 459 or 57 0707 the first digit (5) means the battery voltage is 12V. The subsequent digits 44 or 70 inform about the capacity of the battery. The last two digits indicate design features, such as its shape, pole position, degassing hose, handle and fixing bar at the base.
Tips: If you're looking to buy a new battery, you don't have to settle for the type number listed by Audi. Battery manufacturers maintain comparison lists based on which a suitable battery can be determined. For the sake of a lower price, practical battery carrying handles can be omitted. But to ensure safety, no compromises can be made when attaching the battery.
