Table of contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓
The fuel level indicator sensor is mounted on top of the gas tank. It consists of a float and a potentiometer.

When the fuel level drops, the float also drops. The potentiometer connected to the float increases the electrical resistance of the sensor. Because of this, the voltage on the device indicator drops and the fuel level indicator arrow goes down.

Removal

Caution: Do not work near open flames.

Disconnect the cable from the battery.

Disconnect the connector from the fuel level indicator sensor.

Open the sensor lock by turning it to the left using the VAG 2012A tool, or if you don't have one, use a suitable pipe wrench or a wooden strip with light hammer blows. No sparks should form.

Remove the sensor, placing a rag underneath to collect any dripping gasoline

Installation

Insert the fuel level indicator sensor with the gasket so that the arrow on the tightened sensor points in the direction of travel. Pre-lubricate the gasket with engine oil.

Turn the sensor to the right and snap it into place.

Install the fuel hoses and secure with new clamps.

Connect the electrical plug.

Connect the ground cable from the battery.

Check the operation of the fuel gauge on the dashboard.
