General description of the ignition system (Audi 80 B3)

The ignition system includes the battery, ignition coil, electronic switch or control unit, distributor and spark plugs. There are four different systems described in this section: TCI-H, FEI, Motronic and MPI. Each system consists of a low voltage (LT) circuit and a high voltage (HT) circuit. The low voltage circuit is interrupted regularly by the Hall sensor in the distributor and this causes a drop in the magnetic field around the primary winding of the ignition coil. The secondary winding of the ignition coil is located on the primary winding and the magnetic field causes a high voltage current. The current is supplied to the spark plug through the breaker-distributor cap and rotor.

The exact timing of the ignition spark depends on engine speed and load, giving the most efficient setting.

The distributor is located in the cylinder block on 4-cylinder engines, and in the right rear of the cylinder head on 5-cylinder engines.

Maintenance

Perform the following procedure at the frequency given in "Technical maintenance" at the beginning of the guide.
