Removal

The radiator of AUDI cars consists of two plastic tanks, light metal tubes and cooling fins. Plastic radiator tanks in cars with 4- and 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are located on the right and left sides, and in five-cylinder engines - on the top and bottom. From these tanks, the coolant circulates through tubes, which have cooling fins to increase the cooling surface.

If there is an obvious defect in the radiator, you can dismantle it yourself for delivery to the workshop.

1. Remove the engine splash guard.

2. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.

3. Disconnect all coolant circulation hoses from the radiator.

4. Disconnect the power plug of the radiator fan thermal switch.

5. Disconnect the radiator fan power plug

6. Four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Remove the mounting bolts at the top and bottom of both sides of the radiator (see illustration).

7. Move the radiator back a little and remove it together with the blower fan.

8. Five-cylinder engine. Remove the upper part of the radiator protective cover. To do this, unscrew the nuts of the mounting bolts and remove the cover by pulling it forward (see illustration).

9. Disconnect the supply and return hoses from the radiator, as well as the hose going to the expansion tank.

10. Remove the bracket on the right side of the radiator.

11. Disconnect the air hose on the right side of the radiator.

12. Disconnect the thermal switch plug.

13. Remove the bolt securing the lower part of the radiator.

14. Remove the radiator by lifting it upwards.

Vehicles with a five-cylinder petrol engine may have an additional radiator installed directly in front of the engine. This applies to vehicles with air conditioning, a towing hitch or an extended cooling system. The additional radiator is connected parallel to the main one and thus increases the active cooling surface. Removing the additional radiator is carried out as follows:

15. Remove the engine splash guard.

16. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.

17. Disconnect the coolant circulation hoses from the radiator.

18. Remove one bolt securing the radiator at the top and two bolts securing its lower part.

Cleaning

At the beginning and at the end of the summer season, the radiator cooling fins must be cleaned of insects. Otherwise, the cooling effect of the radiator will decrease.

19. Open the hood. For cars with a five-cylinder engine, remove the radiator cap.

20. Apply a special insect remover to the part of the radiator where the insect residue has stuck, for example, "Summer screen", and let it work.

21. Wash off the product together with the insects with a stream of water, supplying it from the opposite side of the radiator. The water pressure should not be strong. Do not use sharp tools or hard brushes. Damage to the fin plates is possible.

22. Clean the radiator surface around the radiator filler neck, as well as the surfaces under the rubber gaskets, if any.
