Withdrawal
Place a vessel under the flange of the thermostat housing.
Unscrew thermostat flange -2-, drain and collect coolant.
Remove the coolant thermostat.
Examination
Measure dimension -a- on the regulator, see fig.
Heat the regulator in a container filled with coolant. However, it should not touch the walls of the container.
Control the temperature with a thermometer. Beginning of regulator opening:
- 4-cyl. engine: approx. 85°C, end approx. 105°C,
- 5 cyl. engine and 1.9L diesel engine: about 7°C/102°C.
After heating the regulator to 105°C, dimension -b- must be at least 7 mm larger than dimension -a- (5 cyl. motor: 8mm).
Installation
Replace the O-ring, put the regulator back in place and screw on the cap. Pour coolant into the system.
Start the engine and warm it up until the thermostat opens. Check cover seal and tightness of hose connections.
Removal, 5-cylinder engine
The coolant thermostat is located in a housing on the left side of the cylinder head.
Drain coolant.
Unscrew the 2 cover bolts and remove the regulator.
Check regulator.
Installation
Insert the regulator and screw the cover with a new gasket to 10 Nm.
