Checking the fan switch device when the engine is not running (Audi 80 B3)

The petrol engine with injection has the ability to turn on the fan when the engine is off, to cool the injection valves, which improves the hot start mode of the engine. If after stopping the engine the temperature in the injection valve area rises above 110°C, the temperature sensor closes the time relay and it turns on the 1st stage of the fan. After cooling to 103°C, the temperature sensor opens the relay and the fan turns off. This process can be repeated several times. The temperature sensor is located next to the injection valves, the time relay is designated 220 and is inserted into the 3rd slot of the central board.

Examination

Turn the ignition on and off.

Note: Since the time relay is ready to operate for 10-12 minutes after the ignition is turned on and off, the check should be carried out during this time interval.

Disconnect the cable on the temperature sensor and short it to ground. The 1st stage of the fan should turn on.

Otherwise, check the wiring according to the diagram or replace the relay.
