2. With a suitable drift, knock the cover off the inner CV joint, take the rubber boots to the middle of the drive shaft.
3. Remove the circlip from the inner end of the drive shaft.
4. Hold the inner CV joint in a vise, then remove the drive shaft.
5. Where used, remove the Belleville washer from the end of the drive shaft, noting its location.
6. Remove the inner rubber boots.
7. Remove the clips from the outer rubber boots.
8. Remove the cover from the outer CV joint and pull it to the middle of the drive shaft.
9. With a wooden mallet, hit the outer CV joint at the point indicated in fig. 8.4 to release the coupling hub from the circlip on the drive shaft. Remove connection.
10. Remove the circlip, gasket, and Belleville washer from the end of the drive shaft, noting their location.
11. Remove the outer rubber boots.
12. Clean all parts and check their condition. Each connection can be purchased separately as a kit. It includes a rubber boot, coupling, washers, lubricant, and depending on the type, a drive shaft nut/bolt, cleats and internal bolts. Cases are also available separately as a set. Both circlips must be replaced. Do not disassemble the connections if you are going to reuse them.
13. Start assembly by lubricating the small inner ends of the covers. Then place both boots on the drive shaft, closer to the middle.
14. Position the Belleville washer, gasket, and circlip on the outer end of the drive shaft. The circlip must move freely into the groove. The convex side of the Belleville washer must face the end of the drive shaft.
15. Slide the outer CV joint onto the drive shaft until the circlip locks into place.
16. Fill the outer joint with the specified amount of grease, applying it to both sides of the joint.
17. Pull off the outer covers on the CV joints, position the end of the small diameter in the groove of the drive shaft. Use a screwdriver to pry up the covers to release the vacuum. Install and tighten new brackets.
18. Install a Belleville washer on the inner end of the drive shaft, with the convex side toward the end of the drive shaft. Note that models with 2226 cc3 and 2309 cc3 engines do not have a washer.
19. Pull the inner CV joint onto the drive shaft, the groove on the hub to the shoulder or Belleville washer on the drive shaft. Then install the circlip into the groove.
20. Fill the outer joint with the specified amount of grease, applying it to both sides of the joint. Use a screwdriver to pry up the covers to release the vacuum. Install and tighten new brackets.
21. Apply sealant to the surface of the cover that touches the joint, then slide the rubber boots into place, position the small diameter end in the groove of the drive shaft. Lightly hammer the cap onto the connection.
